A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

I started this blog a year and eight months ago.
My aim was to upload something each week,
not that I always have.
but still this is post No 100.
Unlike my webpage that is still under deconstruction,
I wanted it to be less formal
and be able to include things that does not fit my website format,
but still would work when someone would be looking for something specific.

The image is a bit of a time travel back to either 1992 or 1993.
I'm sitting in my uncles garden, dressed as always all in black trying to stay pale.
Drawing in one of my drawing books,
with my favorite pen, the wonderful Rotring Rapidograph size 0.25 mm
that I still use.
At the time I would go almost no where without my walkman,
listening a lot to tapes among them:
The Cure: Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Disintegration
David Bowie: "Heroes", Sort Sol: Flow My Firetear,
The Jesus and Mary Chain: Automatic, Primal Scream: Screamadelica,
Lars H.U.G.: City Slang, Blidt Over Dig

Copenhagen Dreaming

I just came back from a trip to Copenhagen.
I had a nice time with the family at christmas,
and spend some time in a couple of my favorite places,
Frederiksberg Park and The National Museum.
Here are some of the photographs I took during the trip.

Death Vessel

Death Vessel At The Cooper Square Hotel. 2013. 70x50. Oil on canvas.

Gallerie MøllerWitt has a couple of days left of the annual Christmas exhibition Op Til 2014.
The last day is the 22nd of December.
There among other works you can see my Death Vessel painting,
that I made from a photo I took of him some years ago
when he preformed at the The Cooper Square Hotel in New York,
it was a benefit for Participant INC.
My photo was back lit, so I re-imagined his face.
After the jump you can see some drawings I made
at the same time as the painting.

Jonas' Julekort

Today and tomorrow is the exhibition of Jonas' Julekort
It is a show with a lot of artists who each have donated a work,
The work are sold just for 500 dkr
The money goes to the a shelter for homeless men in Copenhagen called Mændenes Hjem
At the show you can't see the name of what artist created the work you are looking at,
you just have to go with what you like, quiet nice,
so the drawing above is not the one I did for the fundraiser,
but one I did two days ago her in Berlin.
There are a bunch of good artists taking part in Jonas' Julekort.

The exhibition of the work: 4-5 December at 10-18
The sale starts on Friday the 6th December from 18-22
and last until Saturday the 14th of December, daily from 10-18
Gothersgade 30,
København K

Here are a link to more info on the thing and a list of all the artists taking part.

Tommy's view

Two months ago when I was last in New York we stayed for a couple of days
at my friend Tommy McKean's flat in the East Village.
When at Tommy's I always have to look out this window,
with the great view facing uptown, it has the Empire State Building in the distance,
His flat is very cosy and green, with big plants both inside and outside,
it feels good to be there.
Tommy is a writer, storyteller and artist he has written a series of children books
he does drawings and a lot of work using metro cards.
You can see some of his work here Link

Titanic Bar warm up

3 Friends. 2013. 20x20 cm. Oil on canvas.

On Friday my exhibition Titanic Bar will open at Gallerie MøllerWitt in Aarhus.
As usually I don't know exactly what will be in the exhibition before I do the hanging.
Here I am sharing some photos of the works that is waiting in the gallery,
that might end up in the exhibition.
I saw this beautiful image online, of a man seen from the back walking towards a bar
that had a neon sign above it spelling out titanik bar,
the rain is pouring down, the only other thing in this film noir image is an old VW beetle.
That image set me going in drawing my large Titanic Bar drawing.
After completing the drawing I found and watched the great slow movie,
Damnation from 1988 by Béla Tarr.

The lost and found

Williamsburg Bridge
And You Want To Travel Blind found and photographed by Magnus Thierfelder

The book fair is over, it was as usually a great experince to talk to everyone there and see all the cool books,
the most difficult thing is not to buy too many book, most of what I got this time was old art catalogs,
a Jackson Pollock and a Clyfford Still both from 1969,
both very beautiful with all the images printed on very thin paper that was chipped in,
they make me want to do a book like that.
My friend the artist Magnus Thierfelder found And You Want To Travel Blind on his way,
walking over the Williamsburg Bridge,
someone had lost the book on the bridge then someone put it on the railing to be found.
See some of Thierfelder work here Link

Beer

Byens Kro
Beer. 2013. 29,7x21 cm. Ink on paper.
On Friday the exhibition Beer 4 opens at Byens Kro.
It's arranged by the two artists Melou Vanggaard and Christian Finne
It's a bunch of small works related to beer by a lot of artists.
It's usually a lot of fun and crowded at the openings, in this old very smoky bar,
one of the few bars where a lot of artists hang out in Copenhagen.

David Dellagi
I thought this was David Dellagi's cool gold shoe on the counter of the bar at Byens Kro back in 2011, but it's actually
Anders Brinchs. Apparently my memory is as foggy as the air in the bar.  see his Oxygen Island here Link.

Music On My Mind

Gimme Some Truth. 2013. 71x54 cm. Color pencil on paper.

Friday is the opening of the group exhibition Music On my Mind opens at Charlotte Fogh Gallery in Århus, Denmark.
I have two pieces in the exhibition. The watercolor New York City, it shows the text from an iconic photograph of John Lennon wearing a T-shirt with that writing on it.
The other piece is a drawing, a portrait of a young man. In the documentary Gimme Some Truth (2000) about the making of the album Imagine, filmed in 1971. There is a very touching part where this unnamed man shows up on Lennon's doorstep, he has been camping out at the park of their home Tittenhurst Park in Ascot where the recordings took place, he is obviously on drugs, probably on an acid trip, he has come to meet Lennon, he wants to talk to him to get to know the truth, he thinks the songs were written for him. Lennon comes out on the steps in front of the house together with Ono and some other people, talks to the confused young man, explaining that the songs are written for him self or maybe Ono if its a love song. When the conversation is stalling Lennon asks if he is hungry and invite him in for a bite to eat.

Music On my Mind is curated by the artist Rose Eken
The artists are: Kasper Eistrup, Graham Dolphin, Ben Venum, Thorgej Steen Hansen, Celie Falières, Christian Finne, Anika Lori, Jasper Sebastian Stürup,  Vinyl-Terror & Horror, Ragnar Persson, Søren Behncke, Rachel Cattle, Rose Eken and Jonas Liveröd
